The day was marked by a coastal cleanup volunteering activity at Fajã dos Vimes

On July 28th, the Fajãs de São Jorge Biosphere Reserve celebrated National Nature Conservation Day with a volunteer coastal cleanup at Fajã dos Vimes.

The initiative, promoted by the Environment and Climate Action Service of São Jorge Island, involved the participation of children and educators from C.A.T.L. “O Golfinho”, who joined the activity with great enthusiasm and a sense of purpose — reinforcing the importance of environmental education from an early age.

In the morning, participants walked a small stretch of coastline, collecting approximately 52 kg of waste, most of which was plastic. This action made a significant contribution to improve the coastal ecosystem and enhancing the environmental value of one of the island’s most emblematic fajãs.

The main goal was not only to remove litter but also to raise awareness about nature conservation, particularly in areas designated as UNESCO Biosphere Reserves, such as the Fajãs de São Jorge. At the end of the activity, a short moment of reflection and sharing was held, emphasizing the role of each citizen in protecting the natural and cultural values of the territory.

This initiative aligns with the mission of the Fajãs de São Jorge Biosphere Reserve to promote sustainability, community engagement, and environmental education, involving younger generations in building a more conscious and responsible future.
